The first part of this route followed the Sustrans Route 7 north from Blair Atholl for a few miles, then at Dalnacardoch I headed north on a landrover track to Sronphadruig Lodge. The route then followed a narrow footpath at the foot of steep heathery hillsides past Loch an Duin then on another landrover track past Loch Bhrodainn and over the potentially difficult Allt Gharbh Ghaig to reach Gaick Lodge. After a few miles I reached the tarmac and enjoyed the downhill to Tromie Bridge where I picked up a track heading east to reach Glen Feshie. As I was travelling with the minimum of equipment, I had intended staying in Ruigh Aiteachan bothy, but the presence of half a dozen tents and a large school party quickly made me change my plans. In reality they did me a favour because I continued another three miles up the glen and found a wonderful spot under a magnificent Scots pine right beside the river. Despite the fact that I had no tent or bivvy bag, I was sure that I would be relatively dry even if the weather changed. There was copious amounts of wood for a good fire, and as I lay in my sleeping bag I looked up to the orange of the tree trunk contrasting with the dark canopy of branches lit up by the lively fire. With the river only a few feet away, enjoying the outdoors doesn't get any better than this!
With a mixture of pushing and cycling, it was fairly easy to reach the Geldie, and the only potentially difficult river crossings were soon dealt with and in no time I was in the narrow upper section of the Tilt. The path was narrow and often had substantial drops below, and as I was alone and a fearty, I confess to walking quite a bit of this section which I'm sure more proficient riders would have relished. Soon I was at the impressive Falls of Tarf and a pleasant ride down the glen brought me back to Blair Atholl.
This circuit was much easier than I anticipated, and is well worth doing.
