Talk: Reluctant Alpinism - Viv Scott
May 15, 2008 (20:00 - 21:00)
(
Social) Climbing in Scotland, The Alps and Alaska
Over the last year Vivian has found himself among other things shivering through a forced bivy on the north face of the Grandes Jorasses, sprinting under tottering Alaskan seracs and abseiling into Beinn Eighe in a storm. What brings these moments together is deciding each time never to leave home comforts ever again... unfortunately Vivian has a short memory.
Growing up in
London, Vivian moved to
Scotland six years ago where he continues his apprenticeship in the weird and wonderful world of winter climbing with repeats and first ascents across the country. Further afield, since his first trip aged 16, Vivian has made regular visits to the Alps to be humbled by the great faces and in April last year, Vivian together with Gareth Hughes went to the Ruth area of the Alaska Range in search of snow and ice - finding slightly more than they bargained for.

Talk: Scouting the Summits - Kevin Mitchell
October 02, 2008 (20:00 - 21:00)
(
Social) The Scout Association almost had a fit - they had a proposal, back in 1992, to try to put Scottish Venture Scouts on the 7 Summits - the highest mountain on each continent. This audatious plan would culminate in an attempt on Everest in 2007 the Centenary of Scouting.
Initially dismissed as an unsustainable dream of leaders with their heads in the clouds, the successful 1993 Expedition to Mt Elbrus in the Russian Caucasus convinced the 'top brass' that we were lucky and that would be the end of the project. However after successful attempts on Mt McKinlay in Alaska in 1997 and Aconcagua in 2000, Scottish Scouting realised that the dream may well become a reality.
This talk is about ordinary Scottish young people doing extra-ordinary things, did a Scottsh Scout summit Everest last year .......? Is the dream still alive? How do 11 kilted scots climbers end up having lunch at the Anchorage Oilmans club? Which way would you go when the bus driver announces in Russian 'left turn for War - right turn for...

The Super 7 Challenge - Olly Metherell
February 05, 2009 (20:00 - 21:00)

This lecture covers the whole adventure; from his bizarre action-packed temporary jobs such as road testing 200mph super-bikes to raiding bins with dirt-bagging climbing vagabonds in Chamonix. Combine this with his award winning photography and you have an evening of inspirational entertainment.
