OMC Annual Photo Competition

Aims
Broadly speaking, there are two aims, firstly to encourage members to record their activities, and secondly to allow members to view photographs and slides that they might not otherwise see.

Philosophy
As a mountaineering club, our primary concern should not be photographic excellence, but should be more concerned with capturing the spirit of some aspect of our broad range of activities.

Categories
There should be two categories - slide and print. The slide category will include both conventional and digitally captured images. The print category will include black & white, coloured and digitally produced prints with no restriction on size or mounting. Prints from slides are also acceptable.

Prizes
There will be four prizes. There will be two prizes of £20 for the best slide and the best print and these will be voted for by the club members. The Rosebowl will be awarded to the winner of a further competition, which will be judged by the previous year's Rosebowl winner, and the entries will consist of the three best slides and the three best prints. The fourth prize will be the President’s Award £10 for the most amusing or interesting historic slide and this hopefully will encourage entries of images which might not be submitted. In the event of a tie in any category then an additional prize to the full monetary value will be given. All prizes will be presented by the President.

Eligibility

All members may submit up to four slides plus up to four prints. There is no limit to the age of these images, but these entries cannot subsequently be entered for the next ten years. Previous winning images are barred from subsequent competitions. To encourage members to produce better images, there is no restriction on improvement of prints and slides through the use of filters and lenses and additional techniques such as timelapse photography, but the images should remain as captured therefore there should be no subsequent digital enhancement or manipulation.

Submitting Entries

Conventional slides and prints pose no difficulty and may be easily submitted on the evening of the competition. Digital entries on CD can also be entered up to thirty minutes before the start of the competition and they will be checked for compatibility with our system format and processed for inclusion by an appointed person, currently Lenny Jamieson.

Members Judging

The slides will be numbered and shown twice. On the first run all slides will get a showing of four seconds and simultaneously its number will be read out, then this will repeated with each slide getting a showing of five seconds. Club members will be given voting slips and will award three points for their favourite slide, two points for the second and one point for their third.

Prints will be numbered and club members will be asked to judge and record their votes in similar fashion in the appropriate section of the voting slip. All voting slips will be processed by the committee and the winners declared. The Rosebowl winning image will be incorporated in the following year's membership card unless the winner objects.

Finally

As digital photography is rapidly changing the way that images are captured, it will be necessary to regularly update the categories and format of this competition. If you have suggestions for the updating of these rules please contact Jean Moffat.
