Weekend 30th//31st August 2 Months, 2 Weeks ago
Hi

Well... what wonderful weather we had for the final weekend of August!!!

I scoured MWIS in search of the best bet for half decent weather. They reckoned east was best sat and west was best sun. Hmm... best pick somewhere sort of in the middle then.

We ended up going heading in Glen Lyon direction fri eve, via Pitlochry because we fancied a chinese for tea!

Parked up behind Loch Tummel for the night before tea got cold!

On Sat we headed to Invervar to do the 4 munros behind (all repeats for Lucy, but as she can't tell me which ones she has not done, I get to choose!). The weather started off promissing, but by the time we got to the top of Carn Gorm, the views had gone. By the time we reached Meall Garbh it had closed in further (about 15m vis) and the rain was on.

It took us a wee whi;le to find the third summit (Carn Mairg). We thought we had found it (false cairn), but upon setting off east from that point it became clear that we were not where we thought we were. Another couple (up from Yorkshire) were in the same boat, and were glad of by GPS gadgetry to take a bearing from. We eventually found the summit after wandering around on the plateu a bit!

From Carn Mairg, we headed east eventually finding an obvious path that took us to the top of Meall na Aighean. From there it was west to the access track through the fog and rain, with a wee detour and associated domestic for good measure!!

We headed up to the dam at Loch an Daimh for the night enjoying a few views through the fog before dark followed by a DVD!

Sunday looked promising, but like Saturday it turned grotty half way up the hill (Stuchd an Lochan). We had a quick bite to eat at the summit, admired the fog/rain/wind, and then headed back down, getting back to the van for soup at lunch time.

A lazy drive home via Killin ended a wet, but pleasent weekend with 5 new Munros in the bag for me. Loops: I am catching you up - you'll have to work out which ones you have not done!!

I had Friday off, having had to cancel my previous long weekend for work reasons. It wasn't the best weekend to take a long weekend, but it wasn't too bad in the East.
We headed up to Morven (NE of Ballater) on Friday morning. The weather got better as we went, and it was warm and sunny on the hill (though very humid):

We stayed in Braemar YH, and had a quick day on Carn na Drochaide (across the river from town, above the Linn of Quoich)

We headed home after that, via the Blairgowrie cheese shop, and a visit to a cafe to meet up with Helen and Vicky. We didn't think it worth heading for the hills on Sunday, so visited Kelvingrove museum, and the fossil grove at Victoria Park:

Rod and I made a day trip to Aviemore, as the forecast seemed best in the East for Saturday and more and more hopeless everywhere for Sunday. We left the car at Glenmore Lodge and went up Creag Mhor, came back via Bynack More, another repeat tick. It was warm and sunny with a strong but warm breeze. We got some good views of Beinn a'Bhuird, Beinn Mheadhoin, etc in between the cloudy spells and, going up "from the back", had a good look at the Barns of Bynack, some bizarre granite torrs, even by Cairngorm standards. A fairly "desolate" area but we enjoyed it because of that. The area around Lochan Uaine was beautiful as the heather was still blossoming there. Back at Glenmore Lodge for tea - the bar was very busy.

Had a lovely day at Logie Head on Friday. Drove up in the morning and went climbing in the afternoon and early evening. Great weather with lots of sunshine and very warm, a bit like climbing in Spain or France and in a cracking setting by the sea. Great to be climbing in shorts & t-shirt Routes done were: Poacher, Bladder Wrack, Cullenary Delight, Sea Urchin, Fallen Star & Fisherman's Tail. Headed back to my brother's place in Lintmill for the evening & night. Then over to Jeanie's Dads place in Loch Ailort for rest of weekend, very wet on the Sunday!

Hi

There's a hostel at Logie Head. The owner phoned me up last Fri requesting a link on the website (done). It turned out to be the lady with the dogs that Scott and myself spoke to on Sun morn!

It sleeps 10, and costs £14/night and is located next to the car park. She also has a holiday cottage for rent.
