Computer Help, please 3 Months, 1 Week ago

Hi, I am looking for genuine support here with a problem that flared on my computer without any warning; namely I couldn't run any Excel application or stored file. I had a pop-up message saying that I had to ' verify access to file ACWZLIB.MBE. This file appears in my C drive files in a Microsoft Office pro 2003 folder.
To-date, I have had a fully functioning machine, covered by AVG Free (8.0) and I have used all Microsoft's recent upgrade installations. Oddly, there was one last week that may have been the cause of this problem.
Anyhow to cut through a long weekend of trying to bust this problem, I uninstalled Office Pro. 2003 and tried to re-install it but instead of easing the problem I now can not install it as the installation stops at the 'Copying new files' and says 'error code 1304 & that I have to 'verify access to ACWZLIB.MBE'.
I have run scans on this file, I have been through all the microsoft related forum and all I can find out is that the 'error code 1304' relates to a service pack that I have installed but it doesn't link to or explain the connection to the file I am being denied access to but was running fine only 3 days ago!
Can anyone tell me what has happened because, needless to say microsoft wont and don't reply to problems and the computer shops just say 'oh, you'll have to let us see the problem running in our workshops before we can give you an idea of what's wrong..... at a basic cost of £x+labour+VAT and that's before they do anything?
I'll happily pay if there is some de-bugging work but if there is a genuine piece of home work I can do then I'll give it a try, first.
Thanks for your time, folk aye, Andy

Hi Andy,
If the install is failing at the point of copying the data to the hard drive then an error 1304 relates to issues with either the CD drive or the installation media.
Try giving the CD a wipe or copying the content of the CD to the HDD, if you have enough space, and running the install from there.

Hi Andy. Alasdair's advice seems sound, but you might also want to try searching for the file acwzlib.exe on your computer, renaming it to something like acwzlib.old then trying the reinstall again. You may also have to do the same for the files:
acwzmain.mde acwztool.mde
(rename them and change the .mde to .old )
Let us know whether this helps.

Unfortunately, I'm back much too soon. I contniue to remain unable to get any access to the file ACWZLIB.MDE.
I can see the icon for this file in my C drive - Microsoft Files - but the icon is blank. Any attempt to re-name is locked ( i get no response from a right click on the icon) and any attempt to re-install from my CD Rom is also stopped when the machine wants to copy this file.
I get the error message as already written (1304) and the exceedingly odd message that asks me to 'verify that I have access to the file .....'
I have never seen, heard of nor experienced this problem before and, other websites inviting me to spend loads of cash to get 'instant clean-ups' and 'unlock codes', seem unable to offer me any clue as to what the 'verify access bit is about.
Am I nearing the point when I have to have the machine totally de-bugged? aye, Andy

Two further suggestions: - Make sure you're using an account that has full access to your PC (an Administrator account), rather than a more restricted user account - Try downloading this and using it to delete the files I mentioned above, then reinstalling: http://www.killbox.net/

You could always just forget MS Office and install OpenOffice (free) instead? I have not used MS office for years open office does all I require.

Andy,
You say the problem relates to a service pack that you installed. You could try uninstalling that particular update and see if that helps.
You don't say which version of Windows you are using, but in XP for example:
Start -> Settings -> Control Panel
Then open Add/Remove Programs where you can see all Wimdows updates and remove them as required.
